According to sources speaking to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Memphis Grizzlies informed forward Dillon Brooks that they will not, under any circumstances, re-sign him this summer.
Memphis and Brooks reportedly discussed a new beginning that would be advantageous to both parties during leaving conversations.
During his team’s first-round series against the Los Angeles Lakers, 27-year-old Brooks, particularly for his criticism of rival star LeBron James, grabbed headlines. James was called “old” by Brooks after the Grizzlies defeated the Lakers in Game 2, and Brooks implied he wouldn’t respect James unless James scored 40 points on him. 
The Lakers started Game 3 with a dominant 35-9 first quarter after Brooks’ comments, winning 111-101. Early in the third round of that game, Brooks was removed for hitting James in the groin and receiving a flagrant-2 penalty.
The Grizzlies wing received a $25,000 penalty for avoiding numerous media appearances throughout the series, including after Game 6, which the Lakers won 125-85 to advance to the next round.
Brooks stated he didn’t regret making his comments about James during the team’s Sunday exit interviews with the media, adding that he didn’t think they inspired the Lakers star and the rest of his squad.
Early in the season, Memphis made proposals to extend Brooks’ contract, according to sources quoted by Charania. Talks apparently came to a halt when such offers were turned down.
In the final year of the three-year, $35 million deal extension he signed with the Grizzlies in February 2020, Brooks averaged 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists. The six years of the Oregon product’s NBA career have been spent in Memphi
